The Israeli Defence Force already uses the Hummer H1 and the Toyota Hilux pickup for various duties, but now, one of the worlds most ferocious fighting forces is looking to add a frugal Ford to their lineup.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz is reporting that the IDF is looking into the Ford Escape Hybrid as a support vehicle, mobile command center, light-duty transport vehicle or as a means to evacuate wounded soldiers. The main reason for the adoption of the Escape Hybrid is for fuel savings, but some theorize that the savings will be diminished on the rugged terrain usually seen in combat. The IDF will be evaluating the electromagnetic fields emitted by the Escape as well, to ensure that it will not interfere with any of the soldiers equipment.
The IDF previously tested a diesel Mahindra pickup from India, but it failed to meet the Army’s requirements.
